The Room on Rue Amelie- Kristin Harmel
How could a story with a field of poppies and a woman named Ruby not be a winner?
An incredibly touching story. My favorite book by Harmel so far. The Room on Rue Amélie pays tribute to the resilience of the human spirit during WWII, in its darkest hours. Part historical fiction, part romance, part coming of age, this story is sure to pull at your heart strings.
It is a story of the unlikely heroes finding themselves in impossible predicaments and the lengths they will go through to fight to keep hope alive. I enjoyed this fresh take on a story that cannot be told enough. The Room on the Rue Amélie centers around an American woman named Ruby who finds herself in occupied Paris, newly widowed, with a Jewish teenager named Charlotte in her care. Through her desire to do something of meaning in the war, Ruby is able to find a fortitude and resilience in her she had not know was there. In doing so, she is able to help serve as part of an escape line for downed British RAF pilots looking for safe passage home.
Through her service, she meets a airman named Thomas whose love gives her further meaning to carry on.
I’m not looking to give away any real spoilers so I’ll end by telling you that no matter how many WWII novels you read, each offers a new pearl of wisdom, truth, and the resilience of humanity. The Room on Rue Amélie is an entire strand.
