The Long Call- Ann Cleeves

Now THIS is a phenomenal read! It’s easy to see how Ann Cleeves has developed such a dedicated following for her previous two mystery series.

The Long Call is filled to the brim with immersive story-telling that drew me in from the start.

In this debut of the Two Rivers series, we are introduced to the clever Detective Matthew Venn and his sidekicks Jen, a zany single mother and young, eager-to-please Ross. The body of a man with an albatross tattoo has been discovered on a beach within close proximity to Venn’s own home. As the complexities of the case and two new scandals lead to the workplace of his husband, the detective finds himself even closer to this case than he had originally realized.

If you are a mystery fan, you will appreciate how twisted The Long Call is and how seemingly separate events somehow share a thread. You’ll have so much fun unraveling this mess.

Although I know I could discuss this for hours, I don’t want to give too much of this one away. Just trust me, this is a book you’ll be glued to. The Long Call has everything I want from a mystery: heart and lovable characters, betrayal, world-colliding, misleads, and a ticking clock. Although there are many characters, (and lots of captivating suspects,) Cleeves writes in a way that is easy to follow along. This was one mystery I couldn’t solve, and I usually pride myself in being able to sniff out the perpetrator relatively early on.
